What this lens is good for
A first prime lens
For around $149 this is the easiest first prime to recommend. The 50mm full-frame equivalent is the most useful everyday focal length, the f/1.7 aperture is far brighter than a kit zoom, and it is sharp and light. It teaches you what a fast prime can do without a big outlay. Full guide →
Low light and indoors
The fast aperture lets you keep ISO low and shutter speeds usable in dim rooms and after dark, and on a stabilised body it becomes a capable available-light lens. The build is plasticky and there is no weather sealing, but the optics and value are excellent.
