How to Check the Shutter Count on Panasonic Lumix Cameras

Panasonic does not embed shutter count in EXIF data, so online tools cannot read it from your image files. The count is stored internally and accessed through a hidden service menu - or in recent firmware, through the standard camera menu.

Why you can't read it from a photo file

Most camera brands embed the shutter count in the MakerNote section of each image's EXIF data. Panasonic does not. Lumix cameras store the count in internal firmware memory only. If you upload a Panasonic RW2 or JPEG to an online shutter count tool, it will return nothing useful for this brand.

The only way to get the number is to access it directly from inside the camera.

GH7 - standard menu (firmware 1.6 and later)

From firmware 1.6 onwards, Panasonic moved the shutter count to the standard camera menu on the GH7. No hidden menu is needed.

  1. Press MENU.
  2. Go to the Setup section (wrench icon).
  3. Select Body Battery Info.
  4. The shutter actuation count is displayed here alongside battery charge cycle information.

G9 II - hidden service menu

This method works on G9 II firmware versions earlier than v2.5. Panasonic removed shutter count from the hidden menu in v2.5. Check your firmware version in the Setup menu before attempting this.

  1. Turn the camera off.
  2. Hold down the PLAYBACK button and the AF-ON button simultaneously.
  3. While holding both buttons, turn the camera on.
  4. Once in service mode, press MENU.
  5. Navigate to the wrench section (Others 2).
  6. Select Error Code Disp and press MENU/SET.
  7. Look for the entry labelled SHT CNT - that is your shutter count.

Turn the camera off to exit service mode.

GH6 - hidden service menu

  1. Turn the camera off.
  2. Hold the PLAYBACK button and the AF/AE LOCK button simultaneously.
  3. While holding both, turn the camera on.
  4. Navigate to the service menu and locate the shutter count entry.

Older Lumix G bodies

Most older Panasonic Lumix G, GH, and GX bodies use the same general approach: hold a combination of PLAYBACK and a second button during startup to enter service mode. The exact second button and menu path vary by model. Resources like apotelyt.com maintain model-specific steps for older bodies.

Rated shutter life

Panasonic's shutter life ratings give a reference point for evaluating how much use a camera has seen, particularly relevant when buying used.

CameraRated shutter life
Panasonic G9 II200,000
Panasonic GH7200,000
Panasonic GH6200,000
Panasonic GH5 II200,000
Panasonic GH5200,000

These are minimum test ratings, not failure points. Shutters frequently exceed their rated life. A camera past its rating is not necessarily about to fail, but shutter service is more likely to be needed sooner.

Electronic shutter and the count

The shutter count shown in the service menu refers only to the mechanical shutter. Electronic shutter actuations are not counted because there are no mechanical parts to wear. If you shoot primarily with the electronic shutter - common on the G9 II and GH7 for silent or high-speed burst - your mechanical shutter count will be lower than your total shot count.
