Weather Sealing
Physical gaskets and sealed construction on a camera body or lens barrel that resist dust and moisture ingress during outdoor use.
Weather sealing in cameras and lenses refers to rubber gaskets and sealed construction around joints, button shafts, dial interfaces, and the lens mount, designed to prevent dust and moisture from entering the camera's internal components. A weather-sealed M43 camera can be used in rain, snow, dusty environments, and high humidity with reduced risk of damage compared to an unsealed body in the same conditions. Weather sealing does not mean waterproofing. Cameras described as weather-sealed are not rated for submersion and can still be damaged by sustained heavy water exposure.
For a fully weather-protected kit, both the camera body and the lens must be weather-sealed. A sealed body mounted with an unsealed lens leaves the lens barrel and the lens mount junction exposed. Moisture reaching the unsealed lens barrel can travel along the barrel and enter the camera through the mount. OM System and Panasonic both produce ranges of weather-sealed M43 lenses matched to their sealed bodies, covering wide-angle through telephoto focal lengths.
OM System's weather-sealed M43 cameras include a cold weather rating of -10 degrees Celsius, a specification relevant for wildlife and outdoor photographers working in winter conditions. Panasonic's weather-sealed bodies are also built for outdoor use but do not carry the same low-temperature specification as OM System's professional lineup. The degree of sealing is not always disclosed in granular detail by manufacturers, who typically describe weather sealing qualitatively rather than with a specific IP ingress protection rating.
Weather sealing coverage varies between camera models even within the same manufacturer's lineup. Entry-level weather-sealed bodies may have seals only at the most exposed points, while flagship bodies have comprehensive sealing at every joint and control point. OM System produces the largest range of weather-sealed M43 lenses in the system, covering focal lengths from 8mm ultra-wide to 400mm telephoto, giving weather-sealed kit options across most shooting scenarios.
