The E-PL1 from 2010 was Olympus's first attempt at a truly entry-level PEN, bringing a 12.3MP Live MOS sensor and 3.5-stop IBIS to a 335g body with a fixed non-touch screen. No 4K, no Wi-Fi. It was designed to attract compact camera upgraders with DSLR-quality images and IBIS in a slim form factor. Now a vintage piece with no meaningful advantage over any camera released in the years that followed. It has been succeeded by the Olympus PEN E-PL2. At 335g, this is one of the lightest M43 bodies available, 203g below the M43 average of 538g. Step up to the OM System OM-5 if you want more controls at the cost of 31g extra.

Best for: Handheld and low-light photography

Pros

  • 3.5-stop IBIS for handheld stability

Cons

  • Contrast-detect AF only, slower on unpredictably moving subjects
  • Not weather sealed
  • No 4K video
