The E-P1, released in 2009, was Olympus's relaunch of the PEN film camera concept as a digital mirrorless body. Its 12.3MP Live MOS sensor and 3.5-stop IBIS were packed into a metal chassis at 335g with a fixed non-touch screen and no viewfinder. No 4K, no Wi-Fi. The E-P1 helped define what a mirrorless camera should look like and attracted considerable attention at launch. It is now a vintage piece with no practical advantage. It has been succeeded by the Olympus PEN E-P2. At 335g, this is one of the lightest M43 bodies available, 203g below the M43 average of 538g. Step up to the OM System OM-5 if you want more controls at the cost of 31g extra.
Best for: Handheld and low-light photography
Pros
- 3.5-stop IBIS for handheld stability
Cons
- Contrast-detect AF only, slower on unpredictably moving subjects
- Not weather sealed
- No 4K video
